Quite big in the news this morning was a blurb about how in Willow Glen, which is somewhere in or around San Jose, a guy was caught watching child pornography on a library internet station. There were several employyes interviewed who were stunned this sort of thing could happen there as they keep such a tight watch on what people are doing on their system.
I'm not familiar with the library/internet situation but I am with the Santa Clara one. The internet stations are not in plain view of the front desk or desks. They're usually not all facing the same direction, they're arrayed all around the library, and in some cases they have barriers up to allow for user privacy.
In the library that I was using that just closed I often found people openly checking out porn sites. Hell, once a guy was doing so directly in front of the main desk and the only reason he wasn't spotted was due to the fact that he had a big head in a hoodie and there was a video rack not entirely inbetween them!
Not even going to go into the guys I spot trolling facebook and other social media sites for shots of young kids. Sure, could be family stuff but some of them seem to have extended family not all of the same race.
Why do I know all this? Chalk it up to having freaky peripheral vision and a lot of these guys are not what you'd call normal. While this is a bad example, this person wasnt watching porn, a guy that was seated right next to me the other day kept reciting, in a vaguely hushed tone, the Lord's prayer ever 15 seconds.
Stuff like that draws my attention.
I'm mindful of little kids...and not just cuz they're often hilarious. A lot of the times I see this stuff going on it's at places where the little kid ratio is tiny or non·existant. Still, you don't do that sorta thing...
...though admittedly I've been accused of similar.
Calm down, similar does not mean exactly the same. Heard through a 2nd party that this girl, I didn't know but was amongst the group o' people I name friend, hated my guts cuz I posted adult content at a public library. True enough but again I'm mindful of kids. This was stuff to the House·of·Skin
that was never fully displayed on the screen. Especially in locations where there even is a chance that a kid might spot something, you just need a corner of an image to right click and snack the URL to post it elsewhere. That or I had posts ready to go in text files on disk.
Regardless, I don't do that sorta thing anymore.
After a bit I got sick of reporting other people watching porn in public libraries. not that I ever saw anyone looking at child porn. If I did I'd either report them or kill them. Well, report them. Those freaks are not worth my going to jail for. Given my experience with the Palo alto library system, I'm skeptical that the San Jose system isn't just trying to save face on the matter.
